ABSTRACT

The numerical simulation of engineering problems involving fluid flow, known as Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), is getting more and more importance in the solution of complex engineering problems, specially associated with Digital Twins, IoT and Artificial Intelligence, since simulation plays a decisive role in these applications. This mini course aims to furnish the basics of finite volume method, the main numerical technique used in CFD, followed by a demonstration of using those methodologies in several engineering problems.

In the first part of the course, the conservation equations, its integration using finite volume techniques, interpolation functions and aspects of the linear system solutions will be given. In the second part, well-chosen fluid flow examples to demonstrate the capability of the methodology will be shown. Geometry construction and model creation will be also addressed. Real engineering problems, using modern available tools, demonstrating that the numerical simulation is intrinsically tied to the advancement of Industry 4.0 through examples using IoT and virtual prototyping using Digital Twin, will be presented.

Clovis R. Maliska is a recently retired full professor of the Mechanical Engineering Department at the Federal University of Santa Catarina in Brazil, working in the development and application of numerical techniques for fluid flow problems using finite volume methods. He is involved in industry collaboration for more than 3 decades. He is the author of one book in the CFD field written in Portuguese, and of the recently released book by Springer “Fundamentals of Computational Fluid Dynamics – The Finite Volume Method”. In the same subject he made available at the YouTube a 30h course spoken in Portuguese and a 10h course on finite volume method for unstructured grids spoken in English.
